The Recent TMA Update in NOUN 2026

The recent TMA update in NOUN in 2026 is a comprehensive guide, breaking down into bits and pieces all that one needs to know about the TMA in NOUN.

Since the inception of TMA in NOUN, it has been graded 30% assessments just like every other university, while the examination is graded 70%, which makes it a total of 100%.

This is the standard grading system provided by National Univerties Commisions (NUC).

Recent statistics have shown that students in the National Open University of Nigeria take the attempt of the TMA to heart more than effective exam preparation.

Perhaps it might interest you to know that, as a student at the National Open University of Nigeria, your total grading for the semester is based on the premise of the ratio of 70/30.

Your examination is graded 70% while your TMA is graded 30% and the combination of these two makes the 100% grading for the semester.

When it comes to TMA you don’t want to take chances, I repeat; you don’t want to take chances; this is some serious business.

Having a score range of 28 – 30 will go a long way in helping to sort out certain things, it posits high chances of academic success for the semester.

What does the term TMA mean?

The term TMA simply means Tutor Marked Assignement. Unlike conventional university that takes regular lecture attendance, accumulate grade points from the submission of test, assignmnets and attendance which all these are cummulatively regarded as assessments.

In NOUN the reverse is the case, instead of the long process of what the conventional universsities acknowledges as semester assessments, all that falls under what is know as Tutor Marked Assignement (TMA) stands for continuous assessment.

How does the TMA work in NOUN?

In the National Open University of Nigeria the TMA are three for every course which you register except project, seminar, teaching practice and practicum which do not have TMAs.

They are called TMA1 , TMA2 and TMA3. With each TMA’s having 10 sub-ojective questions.

After the attempting of question 1 to 10 you are espected to submit all and finish, in other to see your grading.

This is done for each TMA’s and at the end of all 3 TMA submission a feedback is required.

Why are my courses not showing on my TMA Portal?

TMA not displaying on the TMA portal coulbe be as a result of some reasons.

1. If you had just registered your course for days not up to 3, then this may be the issues.

  • If  you have registered for the semester and done course registration but left the exam registration maybe due to lack of funds, this might as well affect.

One thing you need to note as the NOUN STUDENT PORTAL has said and I quote is that is that “all TMA1 in all registered courses for examination are made available in the same period.

Likewise TMA2 and TMA3. Each TMA is made up of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank or true/false questions which are targetted at testing your understaning of what you read in the course.

You can only access the TMAs of courses you have registered for examination after 48hrs of registration. This is subject to the schedule on the University academic callendar. Each TMA carries 10 marks that is, TMA makes up 30% of your total score in every course you register.

To access a TMA in any given course after you have met the above stated condition, do the following: Go to elearn.nou.edu.ng

The discussion forum in the NOUN TMA Portal is also a forum where student are encouraged to participate in a trend of an ongoing discussion, by providing answers to questions posted by other students.

Must I Join the Discussion Forum Before I can access my TMA?

Yes, students are expected to participate in the trend of an ongoing discussion or post a question on the platform.

As soon as a question is posted or the student have provided an answer to any of the question posted in the forum, which could be by the moderator or other fellow students, then you have done the needed.

If you are still reading this article, it means you need answers, and I can assure you that if you will hang on with me for the next 1 – 2 minute and follow this article to the end, all your doubts would have been clarified.

In research done in 2019, 85.6% of newly enrolled students’ TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment)  total average grade for a minimum of 8 courses is 15.5%. This is nothing to write home about.

On this note, here are 5 things you must be aware of to help figure out how to attempt your TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment)

Firstly, if you must take it upon yourself is advisable to learn the act of TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) solving before attempting your TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) 30% of your success is hanged upon your TMA

TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) unlike regular university substitutes for attendance, purchase of handouts, and in-between semester curriculum assignments and tests.

All these are not obtainable in the National Open University of Nigeria, in here it is simple and straight.

Things are done a little bit differently here.

Let’s take for example, the National Open University of Nigeria is not responsible for taking students physical classes, this is why I recommend to students get extra moral classes to help foster learning processes and TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) attempt as a fresher should not be considered if the act of TMA solving has not been appropriately learned.

It is imperative to learn the act of TMA solving before attempting your TMA.

The tutor marked the assignment as a no-go area for freshers, I am not here to scare you, but the fact remains, “What you don’t know is above you.”

I am an advocate for students going through their TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) themselves. From my 100 level till when I concluded my program in 2021, I never gave out my TMA.

I could achieve this because I learned the act of TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) solving. I became so good at the act of TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) solving that I landed some gigs (helping my course mates and other departments solve their TMA).

Therefore, don’t even think about attempting your TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) without learning the act of TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment)  solving in other for you not to make a mess out of it. Not to forget that there’s a 30/70% grading at stake.

TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) is delicate and should be treated as such. Sometimes you pick the right answer for the wrong question and vice versa

By now is no news anymore that TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) is delicate and should be treated as such.

Delicate in the context signifies the essence of the technical not how of the subject matter of learning the act of TMA solving.

Why are my TMA Answers Marked Wrong

Take it from me, don’t get it all missed up, it is what it is. Human system malfunctions so do computers, so do programs and so do TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) malfunctions.

To break this down in layman’s language, it is imperative to know that while attempting your TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) by then you must have paid your dues, and even at that, research has proven that, there are cases where the right answer (answers you are super sure of) only for you to submit and you discover that the system marked you wrong.

I had my fair share of this experience; skip if you are not interested, but if you keep reading, it will be worth your time.

It was in 2018, my first semester, and the unfortunate course was Bus105.

With good grades in Mth105, Gst101, Css121, and Gst103 on this premise and with full confidence I approached Bus105.

TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) 1 started well, all questions I have attempted with full confidence because I know how this thing works.

But to my greatest surprise, I had 5/10, with mixed feelings I was not sure what happened.

I attempted TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) 2, but it was worst this time, I dropped by 1 point, 4/10. Now I was furious.

I gathered little confidence, I had to. I was not willing to back out. So I gunned for the last attempt, and it was a bit better 6/10.

At this point, it became apparent that something was wrong somewhere. This is totally above me.

I had to make my findings and trust me, my findings will shock you.

This is a mystery yet unsolved, unraveled, and yet to be demystified. You don’t want to be a victim. Be on the lookout!

No time syndrome or busy schedule syndrome as a fresher do not attempt TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) yourself seek assistance.

As a new student please do not ever stop asking questions. Do not assume anything.

It is okay to be you are naive, it’s fine if you have little or no access to legit information, as there are imposters and confusing or no legit information everywhere, this does not call for alarm.

It is a normal process, and it is soon forgotten the moment you get a link to a legit source of information. You can rest assured of getting links to legit information here at Coachayo.com

Please note that TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) is not what you rush into. You must pay attention to details. To the slightest and minute words, sentences, and phrases.

Words can be switched; an alphabet can be changed just to test how keen you are to notice the minutest thing in a phrase or sentence. TMA solving requires you to get your onions right.

As a tutor, I do encourage students to take upon themselves the responsibility of attempting their TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment).

Be that as it may, according to recent research, 80% of freshers make a mess of their TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) at first attempts.

This doesn’t suggest that the student in question is not smart, the case here is that what you need to do is either, learn the act of TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) or hand over your TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) to a professional.
